Why I'm Excited About Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero

YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! So...DBS Super Hero has been announced to have a summer release and I honestly can't wait to see what happens. It's kinda surprising Toei has taken 3 whole years to give us a new Dragon Ball film considering the merch from these movies is basically a money printing license, but I guess Super Dragon Ball Heroes is taking a lot of their time and effort (not surprising considering that's also a promotional anime). There are some wacky events and character crossovers in Heroes that almost makes it feel like fanfiction, but we haven't gotten any "canon" animation since Broly was remade on the big screen.

Ngl, I'm kinda sceptical and don’t wanna have my hopes up only to get disappointed. This comes mainly from the choice of cgi for the animation, which is a brave move considering the cgi scenes in both Battle of Gods and Broly were probably the worst scenes in them, compared to the flowing 2D animation. That being said, the trailers make it look pretty smooth and I along with many other skeptics can agree that scene where Gamma 2 rotates the gun looks pretty satisfying.

Another concerning scene is Gohan going Super Saiyan, which we all know shouldn't be necessary as his Ultimate/Mystic form is already his peak. Going back to Super Saiyan feels like an erasure of the Ultimate form, which as you can probably tell by how much I'm defending it, is my favourite version of Gohan. Him making holes into Super Buu's gooey body and completely dominating him with nothing but punches and kicks was one of the most satisfying battles in Z. I'm interested to see the angle they're gonna take and how they're gonna justify the switch back to Super Saiyan.

This brings me to the other major point. Piccolo's new yellowish transformation. The weird thing here is that Piccolo's base form in the trailer and posters hides an interesting detail. Remember how in Z younger Namekians including Piccolo had their fleshy, exposed muscle parts coloured pink, while older Namekians had them coloured yellow? Well Piccolo now has them as yellow even in his base form. This was done to make his colour scheme more accurate to the manga, but it unintentionally creates another inconsistency, as Piccolo's fleshy arm parts in DBS Broly were still pink and that is a canon film. This means there is only one explanation as to why they are now yellow in Super Hero... he's getting old lol.

Massive tangent aside, I've been hoping for a "Namekian God" transformation for Piccolo for a long time in order for him to rival the saiyans in strength, just like back in the Android saga. I seriously doubt he could (or should) pull anything close to Ultra Instinct or Ultra Ego but having something comparable to Blue would be awesome, especially since 17 who was his rival in Z, was shown to more or less match Blue (somehow).

Quickly addressing the other saiyan characters. It seems Gohan and Piccolo will be the main focus of the film with Goku and Vegeta taking more of a back seat. I will say I'm glad the writers didn’t forget about Broly as it seems all 3 pure bloods are training regularly on Beerus' planet. I'm a huge Broly fan so seeing him treated as a recurring character and not a one off movie villain feels very refreshing. Another thing to address are Goten and Trunk's aged up designs. ABOUT TIME! They finally look accurate to their age and the little Easter egg in the poster of a failed fusion means we're gonna see some goofy ahh monkey business lol. Side note, Trunks' hair is now blue much like his future self which has caused the emergence of many theories, ranging from him dying his hair to look like his future self to his hair colour changing naturally as he ages to (the most likely one) simply being blue to be more accurate to the manga's intended colour scheme.

Finally, I have 1 last thing to address. The villains in the film are the Red Ribbon army once again, but this time they have 2 new Androids called Gamma 1 and 2. From what I can tell they look like they've been brainwashed/programmed to believe they're super heroes and our main gang of characters to be villains. This may or may not result in some sort of misunderstanding plot where they figure out they've been misled by the Red Ribbon army and end up joining forces with Gohan and Piccolo towards the end. As interesting as that is, it's not what I wanna focus on here. I've been following the theories surrounding this movie and although I wouldn’t mind seeing a fusion between the two androids called Gamma 3, I would much prefer the surprise return of my all-time favourite Dragon Ball villain, Cell.

Although nothing's been confirmed, there have been rumours about Cell returning, which I would be thrilled about considering both Frieza and Majin Buu are still around. Cell is the final missing piece of the puzzle to ensure the classic Z trio of villains is back in action. Combined with the potential increase in power from absorbing Gamma 1 and 2 and you have a genuinely threatening version of Cell that can surpass even Super Perfect Cell. Dude...IT'S TIME FOR CELL'S RETURN! #TeamCell

Overall, despite some concerns over the animation style and some potentially questionable power scaling, the new transformations, aged up designs and remaining mystery make me very excited for DBS Super Hero. I'll see ya in the cinemas.
