Crunchyroll's TERRIBLE Anime Awards

WARUUUUP. Here's a video I made going over this year's Crunchyroll Anime Awards.

The biggest thing this year is the "controversy" of not including Fall 2022 in the list. This is weird, considering their main justification seems to be fear of recency bias. I don't think should be a major concern as their "experts" are also a major part of deciding who wins the categories and AOT final season part 2 came out in Winter of 2022, yet is in half the categories lol. Anyway, it wouldn't have been such a shame if Bleach's return after 10 long years wasn't a part of it.

I go into all the categories in detail in the video, so I'm gonna focus on my top 3 anime this year. In summary, I would put AOT final season part 1 as my anime of the year, followed by Bleach TYBW in second place and Cyberpunk Edgerunners in third. AOT has to take it for that incredible episode where (spoilers) Eren and Zeke are going through Grisha's memories, culminating in the big reveal where Eren "Did nothing wrong" Yeager is revealed to have orchestrated everything. This moment singlehandedly ensured it won anime of the year for me. I haven't been so invested in a story and it's characters in years and I think it's pretty clear AOT will go down as a must watch anime and one of the GOATS.

Bleach still excels in the hype, fights and style departments as always, while Edgerunners sets the mood and atmosphere like nothing else this year. Bleach TYBW is just getting started with most of the major payoffs coming in later, while Cyberpunk Edgerunners solidifies itself as the best anime based on a videogame and my favorite thing to come out of studio Trigger. A final shoutout to studio Pierrot for taking 95% of Boruto's animation budget and adding it to Bleach. You guys had me worries for a bit with those cgi hollows, but the rest was a total chef's kiss.
