Sonic 3: When a Movie Loves Its Fans

I'M FINALLY TALKING ABOUT SONIC 3!! So, one of the oldest blogs I've done here on my website, from all the way back in 2022 (which in internet time was basically 300 years ago) was talking about Sonic 2 and how much I liked it. Well, I'm glad to say Sonic 3 was even better and I'd honestly call it the best video game movie of all time. The video game movie bar is honestly pretty low with a handful of films actually worth watching, but so far all of Sonic's recent entries are definitely part of that list. I actually rewatched Sonic 1 and 2 right before I went to see 3 and both of these movies still hold up extremely well. The scores for me also get progressively higher with each film, where Sonic 1 was a 7/10, Sonic 2 was an 8/10 and Sonic 3 was a 9/10.

Ignoring all of the Oscars' pretentious picks, my movie of the year for 2024 is a toss up between Deadpool & Wolverine and Sonic 3. No other movies came anywhere close to the amount of fun I had watching these two films. Coincidentally, I think a lot of what makes those movies great is based on pre-existing media and the masterful way it gets referenced and adapted. Deadpool & Wolverine paid a beautiful homage to the pre-MCU era of Marvel films and in a similar vein, Sonic 3 was the modernized adaptation of Sonic Adventure 2, which is regarded as one of, if not the best Sonic games of all time.

I remember in one of my videos, I mentioned my experience with Sonic is limited to Adventure 2, Riders and Rule 34 and that was NOT a joke lol. I'm not the biggest Sonic fan of all time, but I was there early enough to remember watching those fan made flash animations on YouTube so I'd say I'm more of a casual, 2000s fan. What I'm a HARDCORE fan of though is the soundtrack of Sonic. I think as far as gaming franchises go, Sonic easily has the greatest music of them all. Pretty much every Crush 40 song used is an absolute BANGER and I'm just gonna say it right now, THE SCENE WHERE SONIC AND SHADOW GO SUPER AND FLY AWAY WITH LIVE AND LEARN PLAYING IS ABSOULTE CINEMA.

Speaking of Shadow… one of the coolest characters of all time. 2000s edge is BACK and bro is the living embodiment of it. They did a great job of making him seem like a massive threat by effortlessly beating Sonic, Knuckles and Tails. On a side note, hearing Keanu Reeves and Idris Elba voicing Shadow and Knuckles is some parallel universe type shit, cuz that was straight outta Cyberpunk 2077. Johnny Silverhand and Solomon Reed in an alternate dimension lol. Another major thing I have to mention is the INSANE amount of fanservice, references and callbacks, which are really nice touches for those in the audience who know. The jumping out of the plane, tons of fan favorite lines, Shadow's teleportations being shot for shot like the trailer in his own game, the bike, the gun, it's all there.

This is what happens when the people in charge of the movie actually listen to their core audience, care about what they think and make the movie specifically for them. All of that seems like a total no-brainer, but you'd be surprised how many movie productions are hell-bent on doing the exact opposite of what their fans want out of spite (*cough cough* Star Wars). Thankfully, none of this modern day vitriol for their own fandom is seen in the Sonic movies and I have to give the entire staff massive props for it. I mean even before the first movie released, how many other studios can you name that would do a complete 180 after the community's reaction to Sonic's initial design? These legends gave him a whole cartoon glow up and that redesign has worked out phenomenally well for the whole franchise.

Sonic 3 felt like a HUGE DEAL. I remember going to both of the previous movies and the hype was nowhere near what it was for 3, which was a proper event. As goofy as this is to admit, the merch in the cinema also contributed to a lot of my enjoyment of the movie. I got 4 drinking cups with figures of Sonic, Shadow, Knuckles and Tails as well as a metal popcorn bucket with the characters on it. Shoutout to my friend who also got us recliner seats… PEAK EXPERIENCE!! Another bonus is we didn't have any kids puking their guts out like last time, which is always a bonus lol.

The last thing I wanna talk about are the post credit scenes, yes… plural. Dirty move by the way since I left after the first one, cuz why the hell would I assume there's a second one?! Anyway, the first post credit scene sets up Sonic 4 with the reveal of Metal Sonic as the villain and Amy as the new companion to the main gang. I think a lot of people were expecting Silver, but I guess he'll be the main new character in Sonic 5. Metal Sonic and Amy both looked good, but I can't wait to see my GOATS Rouge the bat and Vanilla the rabbit… if you know you know. As for the second post credit scene, it turns out my boy Shadow is alive, which shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who's played the games, but still an epic way to confirm we'll be seeing more of him. I just wish I saw it at the cinema…

In conclusion, Sonic 3 was an absolutely amazing movie. Although I don’t believe Jim Carrey when he says this is his final movie, if it actually turns out to be true, he can be extremely proud of his work. Everyone did a fantastic job!
