My New Favorite Comic Book

YOOOOOOOOOO you know what time it is baby! This month I wanna talk about a comic I've been reading, which has officially shot up to my number 1 spot. The series I'm talking about is Danger Girl! Before that thought, here's a little history for some context.

I've been a huge fan of comic books ever since I was a kid with Spiderman being my favorite series. I still have a fond memory from all the way back in pre-school of eating breakfast while sitting under a desk and reading the latest Spiderman issue at the time. My love for comics continued into my early teens where I managed to collect a decent amount of graphic novels, but I stopped buying and reading when I was around 15. I just kinda lost interest since a lot of the superhero formulas felt pretty repetitive. I also found I prefer watching comic book adaptions rather than reading comics like in the case of The Boys. I would also love to say Invincible but unfortunately the animation kinda sucks a lot of the time, where its pretty obvious the comic is the superior way to experience it.

Anyway, I stumbled upon a random YouTube video showing off this Danger Girl graphic novel and as soon as I saw the character designs I was hooked. I went on Ebay and managed to find the trade paperback which compiles all 7 issues from it's original run. Over the next week I'd read a chapter a day and MAN THIS SHIT IS PEAK!!! To give a brief summary, Danger Girl is about a secret spy organization called... Danger Girl lol. It's mostly comprised of hot chicks with a few cool dudes helping them along the way. There's a main trio of women, which a lot of people seem to compare directly to Charlie's Angels. Although that's pretty accurate, I found that it reminded me more of Totally Spies lol.

To be honest, I bought it solely based on the character designs of the main trio of women since they're all total gooner material. So imagine my SHOCK when the writing was actually what got me fully invested and kept me both laughing and eager to read on once every chapter ended. I was over here planning to read it with one hand only, but instead my eyes were glued to the pages out of genuine interest. I think I've had a little bit of a revelation, where I kinda forgot non-superhero comic books even existed. I was so tired of the same old formula, that reading a spy comic felt super refreshing and lowkey made me wanna explore other genres.

Since this is a series from the late 90s, I want this blog to be more of a recommendation than a review so I'll won't talk about any spoilers, but I will talk about my favorite character. THE ONE AND ONLY Johnny Barracuda. This mf is solid proof EVERY character whose name is Johhny is a complete and total W. I'm talking Johnny Cage, Johnny Bravo, Johnny Joestar, you name em. The cool thing is, Johnny Barracuda is pretty similar to the MK1 rendition of Johnny Cage in both appearance and personality and as the official Johnny Cage of this timeline, I approve 💪😎  Broski embodies one of my favorite character traits... the lovable asshole (something I aim to be every day). The best way I can describe him is imagine MK1's Johnny Cage acting in a spy movie... as himself lol.

Apart from Johnny, I can honestly say the vast majority of named characters manage to be interesting even if a lot of them aren't fully explored due to the overall short run of the story. That being said, it's lengths works to it's advantage because if you binge read it, it will essentially feel like a feature length spy movie. Even the way the characters are introduced reminds me of an edited montage you'd see in a film. There's also a pretty big twist, which I was NOT expecting... but I'll leave that for you to find out in case you wanna read it.

Thanks for reading and if anybody's got some comic book recommendations, drop em in the comments!
